Donor Support Brings Psychiatric Care to Langley youth
Having given to Foundry Langley every year since 2022, Orion Construction’s involvement in youth mental health initiatives isn’t just corporate philanthropy - it’s deeply rooted in the company’s core values, says Cameron Archer, Orion Construction’s Director of Sales and Marketing.
“We want to help provide the communities Orion operates in with equal opportunities to get the support they need,” he says.
Until recently, psychiatric services were hard to come by for youth in Langley.
Thanks to donors who gave over the last year, including Orion Construction, youth visiting the centre now have access to psychiatric services onsite. Foundry Langley was able to bring on a part-time psychiatrist to work with the integrative team to support young people with mild to moderate mental health concerns.
Primary care physicians at the facility refer youth to the specialist, an assessment is completed and a counsellor reviews the plan for intervention with the youth. This team-based approach gives young patients a chance to review treatment recommendations and reach out to supports in the community before their issues become unmanageable.
The company’s generosity has allowed Encompass Support Services Society, which runs Foundry Langley’s programming, to bring in a psychiatrist to the centre weekly. Since July 2023, young people have made 140 visits, says Foundry Clinical Manager Jesslyn Linden.
“Having a psychiatrist at the centre allows us to provide wraparound care and provide collaborative support to young people working on their mental health goals. It is generous gifts like the one from Orion Construction that make this service possible.”
