When Langley resident Anna found a lump in her breast in August 2017, she braced for a long wait. As a health care professional, she expected diagnosis and treatment would take time.
Instead, her care moved quickly. Now years into remission, she knows how fortunate she was to receive a rapid diagnosis — even though she had to travel to Abbotsford for it.
At Langley Memorial Hospital, patients can access screening mammography, but diagnostic services are only available at nearby sites such as Abbotsford or Surrey. That extra step can mean days or weeks of waiting for results, adding unnecessary stress to an already frightening process.
Langley residents now have an opportunity to help change that.
LCHHF’s $2.1 million Mammography campaign will strengthen breast cancer screening, diagnosis and treatment at LMH.
Donor support will:
Replace an aging mammography machine with a state-of-the-art system that includes tomosynthesis, also known as 3D mammography for clearer images using lower radiation doses
Add three operating room tables for mastectomy and reconstruction surgery
Purchase pharmacy equipment for medication support
Supply doctors with a CT contrast injector to help them see tumours better
With this new equipment, Langley Memorial can provide both screening and diagnostic mammography in one place, for the first time and improve access for more Langley residents. For women who are anxious about their breast health, that means faster answers, fewer delays and care that stays close to home.
